Abstract

This study aims to describe the form and process of resilience among students of the Faculty of Da’wah and Communication at UIN Imam Bonjol Padang after the death of their parents. The loss of a parent is a traumatic event that can significantly affect a student’s emotional, social, and academic conditions. However, some individuals are able to recover and adapt through resilience, which develops from personal strength, social support, and spiritual values. This research employed a qualitative approach using descriptive field research. The participants consisted of eight active students selected through purposive sampling, based on the criteria that they had experienced the loss of one or both parents during their studies. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing.

The findings reveal that students who experienced parental loss underwent three main stages in building resilience: emotional regulation, impulse control, and the strengthening of optimism. Emotional regulation was achieved through self-reflection, spiritual closeness, and engagement in positive academic and social activities. Impulse control was demonstrated by their ability to restrain negative reactions and redirect emotional energy toward productive actions such as studying, participating in organizations, and worship. Meanwhile, optimism served as the primary driving force that motivated them to continue their studies and strive for success as a tribute to their late parents. Religious values such as patience (sabr), trust in God (tawakkal), and sincerity (ikhlas) played a vital role in reinforcing students’ psychological endurance. Therefore, resilience among students after the death of their parents is not merely the ability to endure hardship but a process of personal growth that fosters spiritual, emotional, and social strength.
